Diane Mueller

Diane Mueller
Diane operates Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont and Mount Sunapee Resort in New Hampshire.  She collaborates with members of the Crested Butte, Okemo and Mount Sunapee management teams to develop long-range plans, and also spends time working closely with front-line associates and focusing on human resources, interior and exterior design, marketing and community relations.

Diane’s involvement within her various communities includes numerous memberships and affiliations – she serves as President of the Board of the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley; has been a member and chairperson of the Vermont State Board of Education; a board member at Okemo Mountain School; and serves on the Mount Sunapee Council, which provides scholarships to local students.  In addition to skiing, Diane enjoys jogging, gardening and expressing her creativity through watercolor painting.

Tim Fretthold

Tim Fretthold
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Tim and his wife divide their time between Crested Butte and San Antonio.  Tim’s last position was Executive Vice President, Chief Legal and Administrative Officer of UDS Corporation, a large publicly-owned refining and marketing company based in San Antonio, Texas.

Over the years, Tim has served on the Boards of a number of non-profit organizations including the American Red Cross of San Antonio, San Antonio Symphony, Arts San Antonio, and the Greater Bexar County Chamber of Commerce.

Mark Ewing

Mark Ewing
In 2003, Mark moved to Crested Butte seeking relaxation and a peaceful lifestyle.  He began as the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce in Crested Butte/Mt. Crested Butte, then returned to the Mortgage Lending Business in 2006, joining Community Banks of Colorado as a Mortgage Banking Officer.

Mark is Vice President and Vice Chairman of the Board for the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley, President of the Board of the Junior Achievement Organization in Crested Butte and Gunnison, an Elder at the Oh-Be-Joyful Church in Crested Butte and a founding member of CBiZ, an economic development group in Crested Butte.  He has recently agreed to help lead the Gunnison Valley Leadership Group and has been instrumental in organizing the Civility Initiative of the Gunnison Valley.

In his spare time Mark likes to ski and fish; if he could find a way to combine those activities, his life would be full!
Hap Channell

Hap Channell
A native of Kansas, Hap was mostly raised in Dallas, attended undergraduate and graduate school in Texas, and began a teaching career there.  Along with his wife and two daughters, Hap moved to Gunnison County in 1976, where, after eight years in the lumber business, he resumed his teaching career as an eighth grade science teacher at Gunnison Middle School. 

In 2004, Hap retired from teaching, ran for public office, and was elected to a four-year term as a county commissioner and re-elected in 2008.  In his spare time, Hap enjoys outdoor sports, travel with family and historic restoration work on the family home.

Gary Hausler

Gary was born and raised in southern Arizona and received a Mining Engineering degree from the U of A in Tucson. He worked on projects all over North America and in Europe in the mining and heavy construction industries for 25 years and picked up an MBA in Corporate Finance along the way. For the last 14 years he has been involved in ranching and land development in the Gunnison Valley with his wife, Anne. Gary has 2 children, Greg, living in Boston, and Catherine, a student at UC Santa Barbara. He was one of the founding directors of the Gunnison Area Community Foundation.

Fred Berry

Fred Berry
Fred is a long-time second homeowner from Wichita, Kansas, who started skiing at Crested Butte in the early 1960s and built a second home in Mt. Crested Butte in 1983.

Fred is in the construction equipment sales business and is active in community philanthropy.  He was a co-founder of the Wichita Community Foundation and is an advisory director of both the Murdock Foundation in Wichita and the Wichita State University Foundation.  Fred is a passionate believer in the value of the community foundation to the community and to the donors it serves and feels the Foundation is an ideal way for part-time residents to support their second home communities. 

Jim Bertelsmeyer

Jim Bertelsmeyer is the retired chairman and chief executive officer of Heritage Propane Partners, L.P. now Energy Transfers Partners L.P.  Jim founded the company in 1989  It is now the third largest propane marketer in the United States with 400 outlets in 42 states. 

He is the past president of the National Propane Gas Association the Propane Education and Research Council, and the past president of the Petroleum Club of Tulsa.  His current civic Board activities include the Missouri University of Science and Technology Board of Trustees, the Tulsa Area Boy Scouts and the Tulsa Air and Space Museum, the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley and the National Cowboy and western Heritage Museum. 

 

Roy Bliss

Roy Bliss
Roy grew up in Worland, Wyoming, graduated from Arizona State, and moved from Phoenix to Tulsa in 1970 to work in the cable television and satellite TV industry.  After taking his company public, Roy retired in 1996.

In the late 1980’s, Roy began visiting Crested Butte, then bought a condo on the golf course in 1992 and built a home in Trappers Crossing in 1996.  Roy joined the Board of Directors of the Crested Butte Community Foundation in 2003 and continues now with the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley.

Ashley Burt

Ashley Burt
Ashley was born in London, England, to Australian parents and spent most of his childhood in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  After moving to Colorado in 1989, Ashley attended Western State College in Gunnison, graduating with a degree in Business Administration and a minor in Accounting.  In 2010 Ashley completed his Graduate Degree in Banking at the Pacific Coast School of Banking at the University of Washington - Seattle.

Ashley is the President of the Gunnison Bank and Trust Company, an organization he has worked for in excess of 16 years.  He also serves as a Director for the Independent Bankers of Colorado and is currently the Chairman of Colorado's CollegeInvest, a 529 plan for managing over 4 billion in assets.  He has served on the Community Foundation Board since 2004, and also serves the valley in a variety of ad-hoc positions, committees and volunteer roles. 

A recovering Triathlete, Ashley now spends his free time playing hockey, racing cars, running a private school with his wife, and chasing his kids.

Maryo Ewell Maryo Gard Ewell
Maryo provides many services to the non-profit world through keynote speaking, writing, consulting, training, teaching and project management and service on local nonprofit boards.  She has worked for community arts councils in Connecticut and for state arts agencies in Illinois and Colorado.  She currently co-manages the Creative Districts Program for Colorado Creative Industries and teaches Community Arts online for Goucher College..
Noelle Hagan

Noelle Hagan lives in Gunnison and works throughout the Western Slope as an organizational capacity consultant and meeting facilitator for nonprofits and local governments. During the past decade, she has conducted strategic planning processes for recipients of Colorado Trust grants for Health Partnerships, Immigrant Integration, and Early Childhood Health Integration. Noelle served on the Montrose City Council from 2000 to 2008, including two terms as Mayor and in 1998 co-founded Passage Charter School, a small Montrose high school focused on the needs of pregnant and parenting teens and their children.

Her past public service also includes terms on the Montrose Regional Library District Board, 7th Judicial District Juvenile Planning Board, Montrose County Housing Authority and the Colorado Municipal League Executive Board. In addition to her position on the Board of the CFGV, Noelle currently serves as a trustee for Western State College in Gunnison; as a member of the San Juan Regional Council, an outreach program of the El Pomar Foundation; and as trustee for the Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation.

Anne Hausler

Anne Hausler
After teaching developmentally disabled children and adults and counseling in juvenile justice programs until the mid 1970s, Anne spent 20 years in adult education, technical training, and executive development in major corporations and the public sector and taught eight years in graduate instructional technology programs at San Francisco State University and University of California-Berkeley Extension.  She holds a BS in special education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MA in educational technology from San Francisco State.

Anne and her husband currently run Lost Miner Enterprises in Gunnison, where they moved from San Francisco with their daughter in 1996.  Anne serves on the Boards of the Gunnison Watershed RE1J School District, Junior Achievement, the Crested Butte Music Festival, Gunnison Valley Cattlewomen and on the Advisory Board of the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley.

Don Haver

Don Haver
Don spent 34 years with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and RJR Nabisco Inc., serving in various executive positions with both organizations.  During the last ten years of his tenure with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Don acted as Vice President of Community Affairs, which allowed him to become involved with numerous local, state and national nonprofit organizations.

In 1999, Don and his wife purchased a home in Crested Butte, moving to the area permanently in 2002.  He is a past president of the Crested Butte Center for the Arts and a member of the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley.

Jay Helman
Jay Helman became the 13th President of Western State College in February of 2002. He joined Western in 1989 as Assistant Professor in Kinesiology and served as the Department Chair of Kinesiology and Recreation from 1992 - 96, starting the Health Promotion and Wellness program in that department.  He also served as Head Men’s Basketball Coach and was named Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1996.

He earned his B.A. degree in English Literature is from Santa Clara University in California, an M.A. in Psychology from California State University at Sonoma, and a Ph.D. in Exercise and Sport Science from The Pennsylvania State University in 1988.

In addition to the Community Foundation, Dr. Helman is active with the following local and state organizations:  Governor Hickenlooper's Education Leadership Council, Colorado Legacy Foundation, Mount Crested Butte Performing Arts Center Board, Colorado Concern and Gunnison County Mayors and Managers, and as chair of Club 20 Education and Workforce Development Committee.
Anne Hickman

Anne Hickman
Anne Hickman first fell in love with Crested Butte while attending Range Rover Driving School in Aspen and spending the night at Irwin Lodge with her class.  She has owned a home in Crested Butte since 1997 and served on the CBCF Board from its inception to the recent merger with the GACF.

Anne’s primary residence is in Little Rock, Arkansas, where she has been involved with Arkansas Arts Center’s fundraising campaign for 40 years.  She was the first woman elected to the Board of Arkansas Children’s Hospital, where she was a Board member for 25 years.  She remains involved with The Arkansas Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Anne Lamkin Kinder

Anne Lamkin Kinder

Anne has called Houston home for 30 years and Crested Butte her second home since 1989.  Her love of Crested Butte attracted her to help form the Crested Butte Community Foundation, knowing that charitable giving could and should increase in the area.  A native of Missouri, Anne now serves as a trustee of the Jefferson Club at the University of Missouri.  She is a watercolor artist whose work has been shown in Crested Butte, Houston, New York, Florida and Missouri.  She served six years as a Commissioner on the Texas Commission on the Arts and was a founding director of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.  She’s a past President of Volunteer Houston and serves on the Board of Directors of the Huntingdon Homeowner’s Association.

Steve Ogden Steve Ogden
Steve moved to the Gunnison Valley in 2006 and began his practice as a financial advisor for Edward Jones Investments. After successful careers in the oilfield services industry and as an instructor for Rockhurst University Continuing Education, he was ready to stop traveling. He serves as chairperson of the Foundation's Investment Committee as well as in several other community service activities..

Pam Montgomery

Pam Montgomery
Pam Montgomery attended both Centre College of Kentucky and the University of Colorado, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. She began her nonprofit career in Breckenridge where she was the Executive Director of the Breckenridge Music Institute and the National Repertory Orchestra. During her 20 years in Breckenridge, Pam also served on the Boards of a number of nonprofit organizations.  Pam moved to Denver in 1994, where she established a nonprofit consulting company working with numerous organizations in both the arts and human services.

Having been a second homeowner in Gunnison for several years, Pam moved full-time to Gunnison in 2003 and became the Executive Director of the Foundation that year.  She continues as the Executive Director of the CFGV, co-facilitates the Gunnison Valley Leadership Program, is a member of the Gunnison Rotary and the 7th Judicial District nominating committee.

Richard Bratton

Richard Bratton

Born and raised in Salida, Colorado, Dick graduated from WSC in 1954.  He returned to Gunnison after CU Law School and has practiced law for more than 50 years.  Always active in the community, some of Dick’s many activities include co-founding both the Western State College Foundation and what is now the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley. 

He was instrumental in the Ruland Project, which provided open space at the south entrance of WSC and the construction of the Aspinall-Wilson Center.  He was on the Board of Trustees of the State Colleges in Colorado from 1963-1975, co-founder of the Western State College Water Workshop in 1975, and Chairman of the Water Law Section and the Agricultural Law Section of the Colorado Bar Association.  In 2002, Dick was appointed in by President Bush to be Chairman of the Upper Colorado River Commission. 

He represented the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District for over 40 years, where he was involved in negotiating the terms of the original Aspinall Unit Subordination Contracts, the 1975 Taylor Park Reservoir Operation and the Storage Exchange Agreement.  He also represented the Gunnison District in successfully opposing the Union Park Reservoir litigation; and, first as an attorney and later as a witness, in a case of first impression which established the right to refill Taylor Park Reservoir for subsequent release for recreational use downstream.

Fred Buxton Fred Buxton
Fred is a retired consulting Petroleum Engineer, registered Professional Engineer, and CEO of Buxton Energy, LLC.  Spending most of the year in Oklahoma City, Fred has served as deacon, elder, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Chairman of the Board of Westminster Presbyterian Church Foundation, and Secretary of the Crested Butte Community Foundation prior to the merger of the two Valley foundations.  He and his wife make their second home in Crested Butte.
Chris Cappy Christopher Cappy
Chris is the founding president of Pilot Consulting Corporation, a firm specializing in leadership development and implementation of strategic objectives for corporations in the U.S., Europe and Asia.  His areas of expertise include accelerating execution of strategy in growth and turn-around business environments, developing and sustaining high-performing teams and aligning leadership education with real-time execution of strategic initiatives.  In addition to his work with the Foundation, Chris has given time to Adaptive Sports, Crested Butte Music Festival and the Gunnison Valley Tourism Association.

Paul Duba

Paul has called Gunnison home since 1991 and served on the Gunnison City Council from 2003-2005. He has worked extensively with immigrants and immigrant integration issues as director of Literacy Action, a program of the Gunnison public library that teaches English as a second language and GED classes. Paul holds a Master of Public Administration and his skills include grant writing, public relations, and organizational development. He is also a facilitator and instructor with Outward Bound, a Colorado based non-profit helping professional and civic groups build capacity for leadership, teamwork, and organizational communication.  

Greg Geer

Greg moved with his family to Gunnison in 1995 and continued his career in the field of insurance.  He became a Certified Insurance Counselor in 2000 and in 2004 he became a partner in The Insurance Center.  Greg has a strong love for this community and all it has to offer.  He also has a strong belief that all members of any community should strive to make it a better place and continue with that desire in every aspect of life.  

Greg is a member of the Gunnison Rotary Club and the Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce.  He loves taking advantage of his surroundings and enjoys skiing, biking and hiking. 

Gary Hartman

Gary earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn University in Alabama and his Master of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin.  After the initial development of his architectural career in the South, he relocated to Vail in 1999 to work with an architectural firm specializing in ski-area master planning and development.  While in Vail, Gary’s position introduced him to the Crested Butte area, and he began working with the previous ski resort owners, the Callaways and Waltons, on their ski-mountain and base village master plans.  He grew to love the community, and he began to feel more at home in Crested Butte than in the Vail Valley.  In a short three-month period in 2004, he and his fianceé Jennifer undertook the three most stressful things one can do in a lifetime:  they got married, quit their jobs and moved to a new community, where they became partners in Sunlit Architecture. As of 2010 they are full Owners.

Gary is a big believer in the power of community and giving back. “We are only as strong as the community we live in.”  Gary is a member of the Crested Butte Rotary Club and he and Jennifer are active supporters of numerous Valley nonprofits.

Betsy Heartfield
Betsy Heartfield moved to Crested Butte in 1985 and after juggling biological field research, retail work and horseback guiding, found her niche at The Alpineer for nine years. She later created and co-owned Paradox Footwear before serving briefly as Executive Director for the Crested Butte Community Foundation. She currently co-owns The Mountain Store in Crested Butte and enjoys all the outdoor recreation she can fit in. Betsy has served as a board member for Living Journeys and 1% for Open Space.
Roger Hemminghaus Roger Hemminghaus
Retired Chairman and CEO of Ultramar Diamond Shamrock Corporation. Other Directorships: CTS Corporation; Tandy Brands Accessories , Inc.; National Advisory Council Boy Scouts of America; Texas Lutheran University; Development Board of University of Texas at San Antonio; the Southwest Research Institute; United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County (Trustee).   Roger is also a former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. 
Bill LaGrange

Bill LaGrange

Bill has spent the majority of his professional career in the jobs area of Colorado, serving the last several years as the Director of Labor Market Information for the State of Colorado, estimating and publishing several data series that described the Colorado economy by measuring and analyzing the Colorado labor force.

Bill and his wife Cora are outdoor enthusiasts and recreate in the Gunnison Valley and Tucson, AZ -- Nordic skiing in winter and hiking and biking year round. 

To Bill, the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley is the ultimate way to impact the quality of life in the Valley.

Delores (Sissy) LaVigne

Withrow Meeker

Withrow Meeker
When not in Crested Butte, Withrow makes her home in Winnetka, Illinois.  Over the years, Withrow has devoted a great deal of time to the nonprofits of her communities, having been a trustee of The Nature Conservancy in Illinois, The Field Museum in Chicago and producer of natural Limousin cattle in Illinois.  Withrow has owned her home in Mt. Crested Butte for more than 25 years.
John Norton John Norton
Since 1985, John Norton has lived either in the Gunnison Valley or over the hill in the Roaring Fork Valley.  Former COO of Aspen Skiing Company and CEO of Crested Butte Mountain Resort, he now consults with a variety of businesses across the country.

John was a founding Board member and the first Board President of Adaptive Sports, a founding Board member of the Red Lady Coalition, and formerly served on the Executive Committee of Gunnison Country Partners.  In his free time, John skis, kayaks, mountain bikes, fishes, hikes and camps.

Robert Pickering

Robert has been in the IT professional services industry for over 30 years. He began his career at Arthur Andersen (now Accenture) where he was admitted as a partner in 1985. He has served as the CIO for a large US bank and an airline company and has held senior executive positions in private IT services companies.  He served as Chairman and CEO of Origin, one of the largest European IT services companies, as a Board Member and CEO of LBI International, a global marketing and technology agency. As the CEO of Origin he built a management team that led the turnaround of the company, which was eventually merged into Atos of France.

Robert serves on the Board of B&J Food Service Equipment, USA, OraOxygen, Canada  and is a Board Member of the Texas Department of Information Resources.

He is currently a Partner of Starworks, LLC, is married with three children and resides in Houston and Crested Butte.

Anthony Poponi

Anthony moved to Gunnison, Colorado with his wife Lealyn in November of 2005.  Anthony has served as the Director for the Coal Creek Watershed Coalition since April of 2006 and also served as both Board Member and Director for the Gunnison River Festival since 2007.  In 2006, Anthony was voted to the Board of Directors for the Gunnison Country Chamber of Commerce and served a three-year term including positions as Public Relations Director and at-large member on the Executive Committee.

Mike Ritchey

Mike Ritchey, former owner-publisher of the Gunnison Country Times, came to Gunnison in 1995. He has been a member of the Gunnison Rotary Club and the Western State College President's Council.

Wolfgang Spohr

Wolfgang Spohr
Wolfgang Spohr was born and raised in Wuerzburg, Germany, and has lived in Gunnison with his wife and three children since 2002.  Currently, Wolfgang is an Advisory Board member for the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley and is Chair of the Finance Committee.  In his free time, Wolfgang enjoys golfing, cross country skiing and traveling.

Ron Watson

Ron is managing partner of Rocky Mountain Real Estate in Gunnison, and has over 25 years of real estate finance and brokerage experience.  He is a real estate broker in Texas and Colorado, and is a Texas CPA.  After graduating from North Texas State University in ‘80, Ron worked for a “Big 6” CPA firm and Trammell Crow Company, an international development firm.  After starting his own real estate workout business in  '86, Ron and his partner grew the company to over 200 people and offices coast to coast, before selling out in ’93.  After a 14 state tour looking for a new home, Ron settled in Gunnison.  He and his wife Julie  y spend part of their winters at their second home in Rockport, Texas.  Besides his involvement as an Advisor of the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley, Ron has been extensively involved in the community, serving as secretary of and board member of the Economic Development Corporation, the Art Center Renovation Committee, the Environmental Health Board, as well as several political committees - and Ron is a Rotarian.

Janet Young

Janet Young
After Janet and her husband discovered Crested Butte in 1988, they bought land at the Danni Ranch, ultimately building a house and making it their second home away from Austin, Texas.

Janet is a retired Health Information Management Consultant and serves on the Boards of the CFGV, the Crested Butte Music Festival and Friends of the Library.  She and Barry have two married sons and three grandsons.

Pam Montgomery

Pam Montgomery

Nancy Ruehle

A transplant to the Gunnison area by way of the Black Hills of South Dakota and Dubois, Wyoming, Nancy has lived in Gunnison since 1964. She attended Western State College and graduated in 1971 with majors in elementary education and office administration. Together with her husband, Ray, now a retired college professor, they have raised three sons and recently welcomed two beautiful daughters-in-law into the family. During the years of son-raising, she worked part-time as a bookkeeper and part-time as a hiker of trails and merit badge counselor for our local Boy Scout Troop, always marveling at the energy amassed in a roomful of Boy Scouts.

Nancy served many years on the Gunnison County Trails Commission and St. Peter’s Parish Council. Hiking, Nordic skiing, flying in their Piper J-3 Cub and reading are favorite pastimes. She finds the work week at the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley full to overflowing with interesting, caring people and their proposals and practices for improving the lives of all who live in this wonderful valley, and feels fortunate to share in such good work.
